Consumers and the Law

The importance of consumers in the provision of security services is recognised by the PSA. This is highlighted in our mission statement:

To regulate the activities of those involved in the private security industry to ensure that the interests of consumers are fully protected through the establishment, promotion, monitoring and enforcement of appropriate standards.

In applying standards to the regulation of the security industry, the PSA aims to ensure that consumer interests are at the forefront of service provision.

These interests are in addition to any safeguards provided under consumer rights legislation. Further information on consumer rights is available from the website of the National Consumer Agency,

The Private Security Services Act 2004 is the primary legislation under which the Private Security Authority operates. The Act was amended by Part 4 of the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011.

The Act has been brought into force by the signing of Commencement Orders by the Minister for Justice. Statutory Instruments allow the Authority to legislate for operational matters as provided for in the Act. You will find a list of these Commencement Orders as well as details of all our Statutory Instruments by clicking on this link:   LEGISLATION
